Frequently Asked Questions

Short Term Accommodation (including respite) is a temporary break away from your usual home – often for a few days at a time. It can give you a change of environment and new experiences while giving your family or informal supports a chance to rest and recharge.

STA can be helpful if you’d like to try living away from home, work on independent living skills, take a short break or if your carers need time off. It’s also useful for transition periods – for example, when you’re getting ready to move into Supported Independent Living in the future.

That depends on your goals and interests. Some people focus on daily living skills like cooking and cleaning; others prefer social activities, outings or quiet downtime. We’ll discuss what you’d like the stay to look like and build a loose plan around that.

STA is usually funded under Core Supports, with a number of days allocated per year. We’ll look at your plan to see what’s available and help you understand how many nights or stays might be covered. If you’re not sure, we can talk it through with your coordinator.

It’s best to contact us as early as possible, especially for weekends, holidays or longer stays, as availability can fill up quickly. If something urgent comes up, still call – we’ll let you know honestly what we can do.
